Hello Law Aspirant!
Lawyers and law students are always expected to
emphasize on facts, and this article also talks about the same. From our
experience with law, we’ll try to break down some common myths and talk about
the important facts related to law.
1st myth: Good public speaking skills are
a necessity for becoming a good lawyer.
If we have to give an example, we know that being a
good doctor is not only about the ability to be a good surgeon. In the same
way, being a good lawyer is not only about being a good speaker. The most
crucial requirement knows what one is expected to do. It is important to be
strong the area of research and presenting good arguments. Presenting logical
arguments is more important than being fluent. One needs to have the ability to
communicate their ideas and arguments.
Nani Palkiwala, whom we know as a courtroom genius
today, used to stammer as a kid. So well, don’t look down on yourself if you
struggle sometimes while making speeches.
Myth Number 2: I need to moot if I wish to become a
successful lawyer.
Well, mooting is not a necessity to become a lawyer.
It may help build negotiation skills and raise confidence levels, but it is not
an essential requirement. One should moot only if it appeals to you, not
because one has to. There are many skills that can make a great lawyer, mooting
is just one of them. And mooting is not even comparable to academics.
It’s not necessary to moot to become a lawyer.
Mooting surely helps you in gaining confidence and learning how to negotiate.
But, it is not the end of the world. You should go for it only if it interests
you. Not just to add it to your CV. If you have it in you to become a lawyer
mooting is not the only way to add brownie points. And never ever compare
mooting with academics.
It is a necessity to be outstanding in the academic
area, no matter how many moots one does regularly. For example, high number of
moots and a very low CGPA is unacceptable.
Myth Number 3: College is not important
People say this too. Some will say that months of
study and preparation for CLAT are a sheer wastage of time and energy as
getting into a great institute is not important. But if we think rationally,
the peers we study, our friends and faculty in college play their own role in
shaping our personality. Hence, it becomes necessary to put in a good amount of
effort towards the preparation.
A good and reputed institute can provide a person
with challenging opportunities to study and learn from sharp people- both peers
and faculty. It helps in equipping one with the required set of knowledge,
skills and abilities to face the real world after college gets over.
Myth Number 4: CLAT is about it being your lucky day
We hear this from a lot of relatives and friends, at
times to the extent that we feel like setting fire to our books and praying to
god for luck. But honestly, if there is one thing that CLAT does NOT do, it is
testing someone’s luck.
It tests a person on 2 parts of their competencies:
their knowledge ad aptitude.
It is the knowledge that one needs to build and
create, and the aptitude that one needs to raise. These are the 2 qualities
that can help one sail through the journey of CLAT to the shore. One has to be
consistent in these to emerge victorious.
Myth Number 5: CLAT preparation and syllabus becomes
obsolete once you join a law school
This argument is absolutely flawed. Thinking
logically, the blood relation questions that we solve during CLAT preparation
will help during the family law paper. Maths will be useful for calculation of
compensation values and General Knowledge is the heart and soul of every
subject, be it law, be it business or be it politics for that matter.
Everything that we study for CLAT preparation is
done to prepare the brain for what awaits us in the world of law. It is
absolutely baseless to think that CLAT preparation is different from learning
law. Rather, it consists of the first few steps towards the journey.
Myth Number 6: Surviving a law school is not a
difficult task
We all not that CLAT is a difficult journey, but it
is only the tip of the iceberg. Surviving a law school is much more
challenging. Be prepared to spend endless nights on projects, exams. Be
prepared to sacrifice sleep and leisure. Law is not a cakewalk.
In our opinion, while you are preparing for CLAT or
studying law, make the most out of your experience. The aim should be learning
to the maximum potential and deriving wisdom out of whatever you do.Click here for the Best CLAT Coaching in Chandigarh
